Sambalpur: Workers’ Safety Neglected at Under-Construction Collector’s Office; Laborers Risk Lives on High-Rise Building as Administration Remains Silent

Workers at Risk Due to Poor Safety Measures
Sambalpur: A tall and modern building is under construction to serve as the new Collector’s Office in Sambalpur. This state-of-the-art structure will house all administrative departments and include special facilities for people with disabilities. However, while focusing on the grand design, authorities seem to have ignored the safety of construction workers.
Workers Risking Their Lives on High-Rise Structures
Workers are risking their lives every day while working at great heights. Despite the dangers, neither the contractor nor the district administration has taken their safety seriously. Most of the workers lack proper safety equipment and continue to work under life-threatening conditions.
Currently, construction is progressing at a rapid pace, and workers are engaged in various tasks such as tying iron rods, centering, and cement work. Many of them are climbing unstable bamboo scaffolding to reach high levels of the building. They are completing dangerous tasks without harnesses or protective gear, which puts them at extreme risk.

Modern Office, But No Modern Safety Standards
The new Collector’s Office is being built at a cost of approximately Rs. 30 crores, next to the current Collector’s Office. It promises modern technology, lifts, and facilities for people with disabilities. However, while safety has been a priority in the design of the building, the implementation of worker safety regulations has been completely neglected.
Safety rules require workers at high-rise sites to use protective equipment, but in Sambalpur, these rules seem to have disappeared. The fact that this risky construction is happening in the heart of the city, right next to a government office, raises serious concerns.
Who Will Be Responsible for an Accident?
If an accident occurs due to lack of safety measures, who will take responsibility? This is the question being asked by concerned citizens. People are now demanding that workers be provided with proper safety gear before further construction work continues.
As construction moves to the plastering and painting phase, the demand for improved safety measures is growing stronger. Authorities must act quickly to ensure that no worker’s life is put in danger while building this modern government facility.
