Sambalpur: Food Safety Department raids; Ice Factory Fined Rs. 1 lakh for Violations, Instructions to Make ‘Blue Ice’
Sambalpur: An ice manufacturing factory in Sambalpur was fined for failing to follow health guidelines for producing edible ice, as well as not having the necessary trade license and user fee payment. The Sambalpur Municipal Corporation (SMC) has taken this action in response to an increase in jaundice cases in the city, which has now affected more than 110 residents. The outbreak is thought to have been caused primarily by contaminated water and food items such as gupchup, chuski, and other street foods.

The majority of street food vendors prepare their items at home, though some do so near their stalls. There have been numerous complaints about ice made from contaminated water, which is used in many of these foods. The SMC’s health officers and food safety team conducted inspections at various ice factories throughout the city, focusing on cleanliness and compliance with health guidelines for producing safe ice.
Despite the instructions, an ice factory near City Station was found to violate the rules. The SMC team discovered that the factory lacked the necessary trade license and user fee payments, and was not producing safe ice. As a result, all ice at the factory was destroyed, the facility was temporarily closed, and a fine of one lakh rupees was imposed. The SMC has warned that any further violations will result in the factory’s permanent closure.
