Sambalpur: The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) had imposed a fine of Rs. 11 lakh on Vimsar, Burla, on 29th August 2023 for severe violations of pollution control norms. Despite the penalty, Vimsar authorities have failed to take necessary corrective actions.

State Pollution Control Board’s Strict Warning

The State Pollution Control Board (SPCB) has now stepped in, criticizing Vimsar for its negligence and issuing a 7-day deadline for compliance. A letter dated 2nd December 2024 was sent to the Medical Superintendent of Vimsar, highlighting violations under the Water Pollution Act, 1974 and the Air Pollution Act, 1981.

Key Violations Identified

• Failure to renew applications related to pollution management.
• Use of equipment beyond its permissible capacity.
• Lack of prior notification regarding the installation of new incineration equipment.
• Non-compliance with proper waste disposal methods and inadequate information sharing with the pollution board.

Observations by CPCB

During its inspection, the CPCB found that Vimsar was non-compliant with four critical pollution control regulations. Despite repeated notifications, the hospital did not renew its licenses for waste management. Moreover, improper equipment usage and unapproved facilities were contributing to environmental harm.

Negligence and Irregularities

According to reports, Vimsar has repeatedly awarded contracts to a single agency without issuing proper tenders, raising concerns about corruption and the misuse of government funds. Despite media attention and public outcry, some unethical employees continue to manage waste irresponsibly, disregarding the board’s directives.

The SPCB has deemed Vimsar’s attitude as careless and irresponsible, issuing a final warning to resolve all violations within the 7-day deadline. Failure to comply could lead to stricter actions against the institution.
