Sambalpur: Mosquito Menace Increases in Sambalpur City; SMC Fails to Control, Residents Distressed
Sambalpur: The mosquito population in Sambalpur has increased significantly, making life miserable for residents. Day and night, mosquitoes continue to bite, and people have no escape. In every corner of the city, mosquito density is rising. However, due to the negligence of the Sambalpur Municipal Corporation (SMC), mosquito breeding is going unchecked. Residents fear that with the upcoming monsoon, the situation will worsen.
Drainage and Sanitation Issues Fuel the Problem
Many slum areas are located near small drains in the city. As dirty water from households and community latrines flows into these drains, they have turned into perfect mosquito breeding grounds. Unfortunately, authorities have not sprayed mosquito oil in these areas. Worse, officials responsible for monitoring mosquito density are not visiting the affected locations.

Ineffective Fogging Measures
Whenever residents complain, SMC only responds by sending fogging vehicles to the area. However, people claim that this is just a temporary solution. As soon as the smoke clears, mosquitoes return and start biting again. Sambalpur resident Arijit Sahu expressed frustration, saying, “We cannot live peacefully in our own homes. SMC has taken no real action. If this continues, diseases like dengue and malaria will spread rapidly.”
Rising Dengue Cases and Health Risks
Last year, more than 21 dengue cases were reported due to similar issues. Experts predict that if mosquito control measures are not implemented this year, the number of cases will increase even more.
SMC Promises Action
In response, SMC Commissioner Vedbhusan stated that a special team has been formed to tackle the problem. The team will use fogging vehicles and TIFA machines to spray smoke in every street and alley. Additionally, mosquito oil will be applied to all drains and stagnant water bodies. The corporation has assigned this task to a private contractor to ensure proper execution. Officials believe that these measures will help control the mosquito problem in the city.
