Sambalpur: Sambalpur has once again witnessed a shocking case of fraud under the guise of a “Digital Arrest.” A woman from Sarlakani, under Dhanupali police limits, fell victim to the scam and lost Rs. 85,000 after being coerced to settle a fabricated case.

Highly Educated Woman Trapped

The victim, a highly educated woman, received a call from an unknown number claiming to be from Mumbai Police. The scammer called and claimed they had discovered an illegal item in her parcel. Though she was skeptical at first, the scammer’s complex tactics persuaded her. They threatened that she would face a lengthy jail sentence and claimed they had digitally arrested her.

Fake Police Tricks Build Trust

The fraudsters, dressed as police officers, conducted video calls to gain the victim’s trust. They pressured her to pay Rs. 85,000 in phases to resolve the fabricated case. Realizing later that she had been deceived, the woman reported the incident to the Dhanupali police.

Similar Cases in the Area

This is not the first time such scams have occurred in the Dhanupali area. Previously, a software engineer faced a similar fraud. While some victims have come forward, many hesitate due to fear or embarrassment.

Increasing Cyber Fraud Complaints

Cybercrime reports are rising steadily. Scammers often pose as members of renowned agencies like CBI or NCB and claim victims are involved in illegal activities like money laundering or drug dealings. They use threats and fake digital arrest warrants to extract money, even conducting fake interrogations while wearing police uniforms.

Awareness Still Lacking

Sambalpur ASP Haresh Chandra Pandey urged citizens to remain vigilant. He reminded them that “digital arrests” do not exist and advised anyone receiving such calls to report immediately to their nearest police station.

PM Modi’s Advice on Such Scams

In his Mann Ki Baat address, Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the growing threat of such scams and shared tips to avoid falling prey to them. Despite this, awareness remains low. Officials urge people to approach their local police to verify any suspicious claims.
