History of International Yoga Day

The International Day of Yoga was declared by the United Nations General Assembly on December 11, 2014. The resolution, proposed by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, was co-sponsored by 177 member states. The idea behind establishing this annual celebration on June 21 was to spread awareness about the numerous physical, mental, and spiritual benefits of practicing yoga regularly. Yoga, an ancient Indian philosophy promoting harmony between body and mind, has gained immense global popularity as a holistic approach to leading a healthier lifestyle.
