Sambalpur: Disorderly Meat Shops Ruining the Image of Education City
Unregulated meat shops in Burla are creating foul-smelling environments and affecting the city’s image. Stray dogs eating discarded meat and waste left on the streets near educational institutions have raised concerns. Residents demand a designated meat market to solve these issues.
Sambalpur: The number of meat shops in Burla is increasing day by day. Vendors are opening meat shops wherever they find space, some establishing permanent shops while others set up temporary stalls. This has led to the creation of foul-smelling environments, especially along main roads and near educational institutions.
Improper hygiene maintenance by these vendors results in stray dogs dragging animal skins and meat scraps onto the streets. Such scenes are tarnishing the image of the education city. Despite demands for a designated area for meat markets near the city, the SMC has yet to address the issue.
Meat Shops Everywhere
Meat shops are proliferating throughout Burla, from the University Square to various other squares in the city. The area near PC Bridge Square has the highest concentration of these shops.

Impact on Students and City Image
Burla, being an educational hub, attracts thousands of students from within and outside the state. However, the open meat shops along the roads are presenting a negative image of the education city. Typically, a healthy and clean environment is maintained around educational institutions, but the sight of open meat stalls is affecting the mindset of the students.
Unpleasant Surroundings
The waste from meat shops is often left out in the open, creating a foul-smelling environment. The situation near the PC Bridge Square is particularly bad, with dogs seen eating raw skins and discarded items on the streets at night.
Call for a Separate Meat Market
Residents are demanding a separate meat market to solve these problems. They are urging the SMC to identify a specific location and relocate all meat shops there.
