Sambalpur: Drain Cleaning Delays; Local Frustration Grows Over Inefficient Drain Cleaning in Sambalpur

Sambalpur: The drains were not repaired prior to the rainy season. They were also not cleaned on schedule. With the start of the rainy season, drain cleaning has become a formality. Deep-seated garbage is not being removed from drains.

Kunjelpada and Badabazar: Examples of Poorly Maintained Drains

According to locals, the Kunjelpada drain on the main road is approximately one and a half feet deep. However, the depth is sufficient for a person to drown. It’s never been cleaned from the bottom. During rainstorms, water overflows onto the roads due to their shallow depth. The state of the LIC office road in Badabazar is similar. The drain in front of the houses overflows all year. Cleaners come in on occasion to superficially clean the top layer.

Old Commercial Area: Partial Cleaning and Lack of Proper Drainage

The road connecting Badabazar and Khetrajpur is an old commercial area of the city. It’s always crowded. Some areas of the drain have now been cleaned. However, areas buried in household debris have been left out. Near Khetrajpur, there is no separation between the drain and the road. There is hardly any proper drainage, only a muddy ditch. Even a light rain causes people to walk through garbage-filled water.

Ineffective Garbage Removal Process

Another issue is that the garbage that is pulled from the drain is often left on the side for an extended period. After the rain, it returns to the drain. This is evident in every part of the city. Cleaners take out the garbage and leave. After the garbage has dried, another team arrives and removes it with a tractor. Meanwhile, if the dried garbage is blown by the wind, it returns to the road and ends up in the drain. So, while one side is being cleaned, the other is being buried. As a result, drain cleaning is compared to the futile task of digging mud.

There is a common demand to clean the drains thoroughly and immediately relocate the garbage removed from the drains.
