Sambalpur: Easy Access to White Poison; Cocaine at ₹3000, Heroin at ₹2500, Police Under Pressure to Act
Sambalpur: The city is experiencing an alarming increase in the easy availability of white poison. Powdered drugs are openly sold in pan shops and on street corners. Drug peddlers offer heroin and cocaine for ₹2500 and ₹3000 per packet, respectively. Additionally, a single LSD injection costs approximately ₹1100. The illegal drug trade thrives in every alley, but the police and excise departments allegedly turn a blind eye to these activities.
Specific Areas of Concern
Certain people are heavily involved in this illegal trade in Cheruapada, Golbazar, and Sunapali. Despite having information, authorities have not made many arrests. Only a handful of peddlers have been apprehended, and the main kingpins are still at large. The excise department seized brown sugar from Sunapali several times a few months ago, but no one was arrested. Despite receiving intelligence about supplies coming from Raipur and Kolkata, law enforcement agencies remained inactive, allegedly due to significant internal arrangements.

A Father-Son Duo Under Scrutiny
A large consignment of white poison from Kolkata arrived in Sambalpur recently. This is thought to be the work of a father-son duo from Sunapali. As the holiday season approaches, more significant consignments are expected to arrive. This duo has been involved in the illegal narcotics trade for a long time, but they have managed to avoid arrest, which has raised many eyebrows. The authorities are content with occasional arrests of minor peddlers, while the main operators remain free.
Correx and Tablets Flood the Market
Meanwhile, the city is experiencing an increase in the availability of Corex and tablets. These can be found almost anywhere, and because they are much cheaper than brown sugar, they are commonly consumed, particularly by laborers and daily wage workers. In Thelkopada, one person has built a massive Corex distribution network, storing the drugs in various locations and supplying them to dealers. Despite widespread knowledge of his activities, no one has managed to apprehend him.
Police Promise Action
A senior Sambalpur police official stated, “We conduct regular raids. However, with elections approaching, we will step up our efforts. A separate strategy will be developed to apprehend the drug peddlers and kingpins. A special drive is currently underway in the city to address the Corex issue.”
