Sambalpur: Government Land Encroached by Haripriya Hotel, Green Trend, SK Motors, and HP Petrol Pump; Notice Issued for Complete Demolition
Hotels and Businesses Encroach on NH Land
Sambalpur: In Sambalpur, several businesses, including the Haripriya Hotel, Green Trends, SK Motors, and a petrol pump, have encroached on government land identified for NH expansion between Ainthapali and Bareipali. Haripriya Hotel is fully situated on encroached government land, while other establishments have occupied partial portions.
Officials from the Tahasil office revealed that Haripriya Hotel has been on this land for nearly 30 years, generating crores of revenue. A notice has now been issued for its demolition. Similarly, Green Trends occupies 800 sq. ft., SK Motors 26 sq. ft., and a petrol pump occupies six decimals of government land. The administration has directed the removal of all these illegal structures.
Land Brokers and NH Authority’s Inaction
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI)’s negligence and local land brokers’ activities have led to widespread encroachments. Although land acquisition for NH expansion began as early as 1962, land brokers exploited the situation, illegally selling or leasing out portions of NH land to various businesses.
Illegal Activities on Encroached Land
During land identification for NH expansion, authorities also uncovered illegal activities such as the sale of alcohol on encroached land. Police arrested a woman, and further investigations revealed that individuals from other states had illegally constructed houses and shops in the area. These illegal occupants are not cooperating with inquiries, raising concerns about future incidents.

Demolition of Encroached Structures
In a recent drive near Ainthapali Bus Stand, the Sambalpur Municipal Corporation (SMC) demolished 20 illegally constructed shops, including eateries and scrap shops. Police discovered that many shopkeepers were from other states and could not explain their presence. When inspectors checked the shops, they found these seemingly ordinary storefronts were actually hubs of illegal activities.
Traffic Problems Due to Encroachment
Encroachment by the petrol pump has led to frequent traffic issues in the area. Local residents have raised concerns over the inaction of the administration, urging them to take strict measures to prevent further encroachments.
Call for Immediate Action
The administration has been advised to remain vigilant to prevent future encroachments and illegal activities. Authorities, including enforcement officers, tahasildars, and NH teams, have initiated steps to identify and remove encroachments. However, local residents demand stricter and quicker action to reclaim government land and ensure fair usage.
In conclusion, unchecked land encroachment has not only resulted in significant revenue losses for the government but has also paved the way for illegal activities. Immediate and decisive action is crucial to resolve the issue.
