ICC World Cup 2023: India breaks record of 20-year-old losing streak to New Zealand
A five-wicket haul by Mohammed Shami and another masterclass by chase master Virat Kohli guided India to a four-wicket win over New Zealand in ICC World Cup 2023 in Dharamshala on Sunday The victory also ended India’s 20 years of winless run at ICC events against the rivals.
With this win, India has its fifth successive win and is at the top of the table with 10 points. NZ is at number two now with four wins and a loss, totaling eight points.
A glimmer of hope had emerged for the Kiwis between 33rd and 34th over. KL Rahul was dismissed by Mitchell Santner, breaking his 50-run partnership with Kohli, and Suryakumar Yadav was run out subsequently, at a score of only 2 runs. After a brief fumble, however, India regained its dominance in the match with a 68-run partnership between Jadeja and Kohli.
Earlier, India responded with aggressive batting as they came out to chase the target of 274 runs. Rohit Sharma (46) and Shubhman Gill set the tone for the run chase, with a 71-run opening stand. Virat Kohli and KL Rahul, the duo who scripted a successful run chase against Australia, are in the middle.
