Sambalpur: Ranajit Bishi’s House Sealed for Failing to Repay 40 Lakh Rupees Loan; Debt-Ridden Family Gets 7-Day Relief

Sambalpur: A family living on the Bhatra-Dhama road in Sambalpur has been granted a 7-day reprieve after their house was sealed by the Bank of India due to unpaid home loan dues. The district collector intervened following an emotional appeal from the family.

Loan Default Led to House Auction

According to bank officials, Ranajit Bishi had taken a Rs. 40 lakh home loan. However, he failed to pay the EMIs on time, causing the loan to turn into a Non-Performing Asset (NPA) in 2023. As a result, after completing all legal procedures, the bank auctioned the house.

Family Ignored Multiple Notices

Previously, the bank had issued several notices asking the Bishi family to vacate the property. However, they allegedly refused to accept the notices. Consequently, on the previous day, the bank pasted a final notice on the house wall, directing the occupants to vacate immediately.

Forced Eviction Begins

Since the family did not leave the house voluntarily, the bank began the eviction process today. Ranajit Bishi claimed that he had sold land and a car to repay part of the loan and was still willing to pay the remaining amount. However, he alleged that the bank was not willing to listen.

Allegations of Misconduct by Bank Officials

Bishi further accused the bank staff of misbehaving with his family during earlier visits and claimed they never officially delivered notices. He also alleged that the house was auctioned without their knowledge and that the eviction is happening under pressure from the auction winner.

Despite a pending High Court case on the matter, the family claimed the bank forcibly entered the house, scattered their belongings, and behaved rudely. Ranajit said they had requested time until the final court hearing on May 8, but the bank refused.

Collector Grants One-Week Extension

Following public outcry, the district collector intervened and granted the family one more week to settle the matter. Ranajit explained that he had taken a Rs. 30 lakh loan in 2010 to build the house, but due to interest accumulation, the amount grew to Rs. 40 lakh. He also admitted that his business failed during the COVID-19 pandemic, making it impossible for him to continue repaying the EMIs.
