Sambalpur: Arrests Made in Tanya Dowry Case; Husband and Father-in-law in Custody
Sambalpur: In a shocking turn of events, a family from Sambalpur under Bareipali Thana finds themselves entangled in a murder accusation of a newly married female dwarf. The accused, Rahul Gupta, and his father, Krishna Prasad Gupta, have been arrested by the police and presented before the court.
Tanya (25), a resident of Jharkhand’s Chandua village of Latehar, married Rahul Gupta on February 4. Trouble arose when Krishna Prasad wanted a dowry of Rs. 15 lakhs before the wedding. Despite the bride’s family’s agreement to pay, only Rs. 7 lakhs were sent to the groom’s account, with Rs. 1 lakh in cash and Rs. 4 lakhs in gold jewelry given out at the ceremony. The remaining Rs. 3 lakh was agreed to be paid at home. However, the remaining sum was delayed owing to Tanya’s father’s heart attack, which required hospital bills. However, the remaining sum was delayed due to Tanya’s father’s heart attack.
Allegedly, the bride faced verbal and physical abuse from her in-laws as they pressed for the unpaid dowry. Adding to the ordeal, customary practices dictated that Tanya, being a female dwarf, should visit her father’s house for a period of time. However, her in-laws allegedly denied her this right, further exacerbating her situation.
Tragedy struck on the morning of March 25, when Tanya fell ill after breakfast, vomiting and experiencing shortness of breath. Despite her failing state, her mother-in-law reassured her well-being. However, her condition worsened, prompting her family to rush her to a medical center and later a private hospital, where she unfortunately died at 2 a.m.
Tanya’s family has accused the Gupta family of foul play, claiming her death was caused by the unpaid dowry. While Rahul and his father have been arrested, the mother-in-law and brother-in-law remain at large, evading arrest.
