Sambalpur: Blood Shortage Crisis Grips Sambalpur and Vimsar; Urgent Plea for Donors as Hospitals Struggle

Sambalpur: There is a dangerous blood shortage at Sambalpur and Burla blood banks. For the last one and a half months, the Sambalpur blood bank has been absolutely empty. Vimsar blood bank has only 10 units of a single blood type left. This problem is quite serious.

Critical Shortage:

The district hospital and Vimsar hospital are unable to provide blood for patients needing treatment or critically ill people. In emergencies, patients’ relatives must find their own blood donors. Otherwise, patients have no choice but to suffer without blood.

Vimsar in Burla is a major medical facility for all of western Odisha. Patients in the region and neighboring states depend on it. Hundreds come daily, and many need blood transfusions. But with so little blood available, it is worrying for patients and authorities.

Sambalpur DHH Struggles:

The Sambalpur blood bank can store 900 units, yet it has been completely empty for 1.5 months. A counselor there stated that 20-25 units are needed per day, but none are available now due to the empty freezer. Even critically ill people cannot get blood. Families must urgently find donors themselves.

Vimsar Hospital Struggles:

Vimsar can store 1200 units, however, there are only 10 of one type left. 110 units are required every day. A spokesperson said the lack of other blood types is causing major problems for patients.

Sunny Weather Hampers Donation Efforts:

The main cause of the shortages is the sunny weather, which prevents blood donation camps from taking place. However, officials are demanding that volunteer organizations encourage individuals to donate and help save the lives of patients who are critically ill.

Appeal for Voluntary Donations:

A Vimsar doctor suggested that if the public takes the initiative and donates, the situation will be resolved. He appealed for people to donate voluntarily, as no one can force them.
