Sambalpur: District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) has become a referral hospital

Sambalpur: DHH is a referral hospital. For minor ambulatory surgery, For minor orthopedic surgery, DHH has to be relied upon by Burla Hospital. Even though there are 2 orthopedic surgeons and 2 anesthesiologists, only 9 complicated surgeries have been done in the last 6 months. The rest of the patients who come here are referred immediately. Otherwise, patients with BSKY cards are allegedly being referred to private hospitals.

According to DHH data, only 9 complex orthopedic surgeries have been performed in the last 6 months. Out of which 4 have been done last August. In the remaining 5 months, 5 surgeries have been performed, out of which not a single one was performed in the month of May. Social worker Sudhir Pujari said that an orthopedic (surgeon) cannot perform complex surgeries. So they need more doctors. A team is working on this which is not in the District Head Hospital. So there cannot be complicated surgery. However, the CDMO can work in this direction and make it operational. But there is a lack of willpower,” Shri Pujari said.

Similarly, social worker Sudhir Ranjan Bohidar said that the state government is deliberately ignoring the health department. Although Sambalpur is the second most important district in the state, it is not looked up. As there is Burla Vimsar nearby, the doctor is referred immediately. But Vimsar is not only of Sambalpur, people of about 10 districts of Western Odisha Jharkhand, and Chhattisgarh also depend on it. Therefore, to provide better quality of health care to the people of Sambalpur, DHH has to be well-functioning. Necessary habitat should be provided. More surgeries should be done immediately by providing more number of doctors.

Mr. Bohidar said that DHH should not become only a referral medical center. There is only one senior surgeon at DHH. Now another person has been hired. Similarly, there is no regular check-up doctor. Therefore, it is becoming difficult to do most of the autopsies,” CDMO (Medical) Alekh Mohapatra said. In addition, there is no necessary infrastructure to carry out the treatment. No C-arm x-ray machine. There is difficulty in performing large surgeries. Therefore, if the joint fracture of the bone is broken, burla is referred,” said Dr. Mahapatra.
