Sambalpur: From Golbazar to Farm Road, Sambalpur’s Drains Turn Into Mosquito Breeding Grounds
Sambalpur: There have been no elections since the Sambalpur Metropolitan Corporation (SMC) was formed. As a result, the SMC presently operates without people’s representation. On the other side, unqualified persons are ruling the SMC, which is gradually becoming a threat to city dwellers.
The city is in disarray, from waste collection to traffic control. Various departments and personnel are randomly digging up roadways throughout the city. However, no action is taken against anyone here. The city’s most serious concern is poor sanitation. As a result, people must endure hardship throughout the year. Even during heavy rains, there are reports of toxic water on the roads due to clogged drains. Light rain creates the effect of a river on the road in several places of the city.
Every year, millions of rupees are spent cleaning drains, but city people continue to suffer on the worst rainy days. After the first cleaning attempts, unclean water continues to enter people’s homes because drains are not adequately maintained.
Golbazar is located on one of Sambalpur’s main streets, which is frequently used by the SMC Prosecution Department and other personnel. The gutters of Golbazaar have not been cleaned in several days. The drain is fully clogged with brick and stone debris. Similarly, the drain on Farm Road is in the same condition. Looking inside the drain, it appears that someone is cultivating grass. Such a situation is seen in many parts of Sambalpur city.
Because the drains are not cleaned, the fear of mosquitoes can be seen even in daylight. It is impossible to sleep or sit outside during the unbearable night heat. Standing still is becoming increasingly difficult. Because the drains are not cleaned, unclean water accumulates in several locations, producing mosquitoes. There have been demands from various quarters to immediately clean the drains of the city.
