Sambalpur: SMC Takes Action on Banned Polythene; Crackdown Resumes After Long Silence, Fined Rs. 11,000

Sambalpur: Following months of inactivity, the Sambalpur Municipal Corporation (SMC) has resumed efforts to combat the use of banned polythene. Following a lengthy pause, SMC enforcement teams have resumed their crackdown, with a focus on seizing illegal polythene. Raids were carried out in two locations in the city over the last two days, resulting in the seizure of 69 kilograms of banned polythene. Additionally, vendors selling prohibited items have been fined ₹11,000.

Enforcement Efforts Praised, But Questions Arise

SMC’s Enforcement Department has resumed operations, and this renewed effort is being welcomed by various segments of the community. However, questions have been raised in intellectual circles about why SMC remained silent for so long. Many residents claim that, despite the city’s abundance of large polythene traders, the raids appear to target only small vendors, leaving major businesses unaffected.

Focus on Large Polythene Traders

The general public has called for strict surveillance of major polythene traders based on previous records, ensuring that comprehensive action is taken to completely eliminate this illegal trade. People are urging SMC to take more stringent measures to ensure that the sale and distribution of banned polythene are completely eliminated from the city.

Recent Raids and Seizures

According to Commissioner Bedabhushan, the SMC Enforcement Team raided a Golbazar shop yesterday and seized 65 kilograms of banned polythene. The shop owner received a fine of ₹9,000 for selling prohibited items. Today, a raid was conducted at a shop in Budharaja, resulting in the confiscation of 4 kilograms of polythene and a ₹2,000 fine. The Commissioner also confirmed that the crackdown will continue indefinitely, ensuring that the use and sale of banned polythene are kept under control.
