Sambalpur: Sambalpuri Day on August 1; Invitation to Ishta Devi Maa Samalei
Celebrate the unique identity of Sambalpuri language and literature on August 1, as Guru Satyanarayan Bohidar’s birth anniversary is honored as Sambalpuri Day with traditional food, clothing, and dance performances across Sambalpur and Western Odisha.
Sambalpur: As in previous years, Guru Satyanarayan Bohidar’s birth anniversary, the unique identity of Sambalpuri language and literature, will be celebrated this year on August 1 as Sambalpuri Day. Preparations for this grand celebration have already begun in Sambalpur, with worship beginning today at the temple of the presiding deity, Goddess Samaleswari, where the goddess received her first invitation. Following that, prayers were held at the Pataneswari Temple, with an invitation extended to Goddess Pataneswari.
Initial Rituals and Invitations
The event was attended by Paschimanchala Ekta Manch members and Sambalpuri enthusiasts, with Dr. Shyamsundar Dhar serving as the priest. Since his centenary year, the Paschimanchala Ekta Manch has been celebrating Guru Satyanarayan Bohidar’s birth anniversary as Sambalpuri Day. Since then, several organizations have organized events to mark Sambalpuri Day.

A Tradition of Celebration
On this day, traditional Sambalpuri food, beverages, clothing, and dance performances are presented on a single stage. Sambalpuri enthusiasts believe that Sambalpuri Day has significantly impacted the promotion of the Sambalpuri language and culture.

Bhabanish Bhoi, District Coordinator Debashish Behera, Dr. Swayam Prakash Panda, Rahul Gupta, Sabyasachi Mishra, Devi Prasad Bhoi, Shankar Meher, Jamini Thakur, Sushama Pradhan, Nandini Pradhan, Kishore Dharei, Nishikant Biswal, Truptimayi Panda, Surendra Bagarti, Sarat Bohidar, Lakshmipriya Pradhan, Sasmit Panda, and Manas Ranjan Boxi, the Manch’s chief coordinator, were among those in attendance.
According to the Manch, this year’s 12th state-level Sambalpuri Day program will be held in Sambalpur, with simultaneous events occurring throughout Western Odisha.
