Action Against Discrimination in Buses
The State Transport Authority (STA) has issued a strict warning against discrimination among bus passengers, especially against women. If any bus staff prevents women from boarding the bus first due to superstitions or outdated beliefs, strict action will be taken.
Under the instructions of Commerce and Transport Minister Bibhuti Bhushan Jena, officials conducted a thorough inspection at Netaji Bus Terminal in Cuttack. The government has decided to extend these inspections and awareness campaigns to all bus stands across the state.
Surprise Inspection at Cuttack Bus Stand
On Tuesday morning, STA Secretary Chinmayee Bishwal and Deputy Transport Commissioner Biranchi Narayan Adhikari, along with a special team, visited the Cuttack bus stand. They monitored more than 20 buses preparing to pick up passengers on different routes.

During the inspection, they observed bus staff behaving rudely towards female passengers who were the first to arrive. The officials also interacted with several women at the terminal to gather more information about their experiences.
Legal Consequences for Discrimination
According to the Motor Vehicles Act, discrimination among passengers is a punishable offense. The law includes penalties such as fines and permit cancellations for violations.
Transport Commissioner Amitabh Thakur emphasized that if any such incidents come to the STA’s notice, the government will take strict action as per the law. Principal Secretary Usha Padhee stated that ensuring the safety and dignity of passengers is the top priority.
Further Actions and Future Plans
To prevent such incidents, the government has instructed all Regional Transport Officers (RTOs) to conduct similar inspections at bus stands across the state. The focus is on improving public transport services while ensuring equal treatment and safety for all passengers.
