Be Careful If You Have a Habit of Sleeping in AC: Experts Warn of the Health Risks of Overusing AC
As summer temperatures rise, many individuals prefer to sleep with the air conditioner (AC) turned on at night. However, experts have warned that this common practice can lead to several health risks if not done properly.
According to the Ministry of Health, the ideal indoor temperature for physical health is 25-27°C (77-81°F). Sleeping in a room colder than 25°C can change body temperature, leading to health issues.
A Pulmonologist says, “Our body temperature drops significantly when we sleep. If the room is too cold due to AC, it can aggravate this drop, leading to muscle and joint pain, dehydration, cramps, and poor sleep quality.”
Furthermore, improperly maintained air conditioners can spread germs, bacteria, and viruses through the filters, raising the risk of respiratory infections. Cold air can also weaken the immune system, leaving a person more vulnerable to viral diseases.
For people with respiratory problems like asthma or allergies, sleeping with the AC on may increase symptoms due to dry air and possible allergen accumulation and sometimes it can worsen allergies.
Dermatologists also advise that extended AC exposure can result in dry eyes, skin irritation, and blurred vision. It can disturb sleeping patterns also.
While air conditioning is commonly accepted, experts advise caution.
- Keep the AC temperature between 25°C and 27°C and avoid direct airflow to the face.
- Use a timer to turn off the AC after specific hours automatically.
- Ensure regular maintenance and filter cleaning of air conditioning units.
- Consider using a humidifier to maintain the correct humidity levels.
The Pulmonologist doctor advises that air conditioning provides comfort during the summer, but moderation is key. By taking simple precautions, individuals can enjoy the benefits while minimizing the health risks.
