Sambalpur: Thieves Strike Again in Burla: 30 Lakhs Worth of Jewelry Stolen from Government Employee’s Home

Sambalpur: In Burla, a government employee’s house has once again become a target for a gang of thieves. On Sunday afternoon, the house of an associate professor in the senior faculty colony of Sambalpur University was broken into, and valuables worth around 30 lakhs were stolen, including gold and silver jewelry. Following the incident, the police, along with a scientific team and search dogs, reached the scene to investigate. Despite repeated burglaries during the day, the gang has consistently evaded the police.

Fear Among Government Employees

The latest burglary has raised concerns among city government employees. Burla residents are concerned that the gang takes advantage of Sundays, when many government employees are off to spend time with their families. This repeated pattern of targeting homes on Sundays has made the community nervous.

Details of the Theft

According to reports, Associate Professor Prabir Kumar Sethi and his wife, Assistant Professor Shanti Kumari Behera, both work at Sambalpur University and live in the senior faculty colony. On Sunday afternoon, while the family attended an event at a relative’s home, thieves broke the main door lock and entered their house. They broke into two almirahs and stole approximately 35 tolas of gold and silver jewelry. Although there were several mobile phones in the house, the thieves did not take any.

Additionally, 12 tolas of gold jewelry belonging to Shanta Kumari Behera’s sister-in-law were also stolen. After a complaint was lodged with the Burla Police Station, SDPO Ambit Mohanty, police officials, and the scientific team arrived with search dogs for further investigation. CCTV footage captured the thieves’ actions, and police have collected the footage and are now examining other CCTV footage around the area.

Connection to Previous Incidents

On October 25, in another incident in the city, thieves had stolen 5 tolas of gold and 2 lakhs in cash from the apartment of a PhD student in Bhuidunguri. CCTV footage also recorded this incident. Evidence suggests that the same group might be involved in both incidents. Despite repeated thefts in the city, the police have not yet been able to apprehend the gang, raising questions about their effectiveness.

Rising Concern and Call for Action

The series of thefts has created an atmosphere of fear in Burla. Arresting this gang has now become a challenge for the police. Residents are calling for stricter security measures across the city to prevent future incidents and bring the gang to justice.
